This is becoming my research blog. For the special interest group I formed at Capital One, I wanted to have someone present on distributed computing. And today I realized, that I want to be that presenter, so tonight I started reading about distributed systems.

Some highlights:

  • I read through part of Wikipedia’s article on Distributed Systems, which proved a good intro.
  • I found an MIT course on distributed systems that I will work through. This is huge! Very excited. I may start rock climbing again so I can have time on the exercise bike to watch my lectures.
  • I read through Columbia and NYU’s computer science department pages to see if there were any fun resources there. I would love to be more connected to those communities. The NYU website seemed more interesting and is closer to my work. They also have a dedicated Systems group. I may try to engage more with their research and setup a meeting with one of the profs. It would be fun to be more apart of that community.

As a random aside, when I was reading about Local Access Networks, I came across UseNet, which is an early Unix bulletin board system that I learned about in my book on computer history. It was fun to connect those dots.

One thing I really appreciate about history is the ability to make connections and see things in context. And I am starting to feel that I can do that with computing. I really love learning. :’ )
